JOB SUMMARY:
To set up, adjust, and maintain production, building, and maintenance equipment, including preventative maintenance, with responsibility for accuracy and attention to detail promptly to support production and product quality.
WORK ENVIRONMENT:
The work environment characteristics described here represent those an employee encounters while performing the essential functions of this job. While performing the duties of this job, the employee is frequently exposed to moving mechanical parts. The employee is occasionally exposed to wet or dusty conditions, high, precarious places, fumes or airborne particles, chemicals, outside weather conditions, risk of electrical shock, and vibration. The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate to occasionally loud.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:
• Analyzes mechanical and operational problems on equipment. Plans for and takes corrective action. Makes necessary corrections and running adjustments to maintain maximum production and quality.
• Works directly with plant management to direct labor and resources for repairs, maintenance, and new construction.
• Test equipment for proper operation before production. Ensures all equipment is safely and properly assembled and ready for production operation. Test equipment after repairs, changeovers, or extended downtime.
• Sets up and operates equipment and adjusts controls that regulate operational functions to ensure proper and safe operation according to manufacturer specifications.
• Direct a crew of production-based employees during shutdown periods to perform equipment and building maintenance.
• Ensures Lockout/Tagout procedures are followed by plant personnel during cleaning, inspecting, and any equipment maintenance.
• Wears personal protective equipment such as gloves, eye protection, and respiratory equipment as needed for a particular job.
• Follows all safety rules regarding machine operation and proper guarding.
• Maintain preventive maintenance program including Purchase Orders, Scheduling, Work Orders, and report resulting information into the CMMS database.
• Train production line operators and outside contractor personnel on the proper equipment operation and safety requirements.
• Identify any equipment problems and inform management to ensure that necessary repairs can be scheduled.
• Checks schedule to determine machinery to be cleaned and necessary cleaning supplies and equipment.
• Maintains reports on work orders handled and completed.
• Inventories and orders machine parts and other supplies to replenish and maintain stock.
• Records and maintains equipment maintenance and repair information in Computerized Maintenance System.
• Plans details of working procedure by determining replacement needs or new material required and develops a logical approach to correct the problem.
• Removes parts and dismantles equipment as required for proper cleaning. Cleans machines and equipment of dust, dirt, debris, filters, or screens. Disposes of cleanup residue in proper containers according to plant procedures.
• Is responsible for taking care of maintenance areas and electrical areas, keeping work area in neat condition.
• Ability to learn and follow a set procedure for cleaning equipment.
• Maintains cleaning equipment, power tools, and maintenance tools in proper working order.
• Lubricate production and mechanical equipment moving parts as specified in company lubrication and machine maintenance instructions.
• Changes oil in machine reservoirs and gearboxes or cleans and replaces oil filters as required.
• Maintains lubrication schedule and records.
• Installs, replaces or changes machine parts and attachments according to production specifications.
• Dismantles equipment, removes parts such as motors, gearboxes, bearings, etc., and reassembles using hand tools, chain falls, jacks, hoists, etc.
• Cleans machine and machine parts using cleaning solvent, cloth, air gun, hose, vacuum, or other equipment.
• Collects and discards worn machine parts and other garbage to maintain machinery and work areas clean, organized, and efficient. Transport machine parts, tools, equipment, and other materials between work areas and storage using a forklift or other means.
• Perform welding, brazing, and cutting using gas and electric welding equipment.
• Fabricates equipment by cutting, burning, and welding various metals. Repairs equipment by using welding techniques and appropriate welding equipment. Cuts, shapes, smoothes, attach, or assembles pieces of metal, wood, rubber, or other material to repair and maintain machines and equipment.
• Analyze and correct refrigeration problems and repair and overhaul refrigeration equipment and controls.
• Analyzes electrical circuits, wiring diagrams, and drawings to install, repair, calibrate, service, or replace electrical devices and systems.
• Performs work requiring knowledge of electrical theory and principles and principles of operation of electrical equipment.
• Fabricates parts if not commercially available, using machine and hand tools common to the trade.
ADDITIONAL RESPONSIBILITIES:
• May operate a forklift in support of production without a forklift driver.
• May operate equipment during relief periods or lack of personnel.
• May perform product examination and rework when the line is down due to causes beyond the mechanic's control.
• May paint machinery, floors, etc.
• Possible member of the maintenance planning team in preparation for annual production shutdown.
• May be part of a team on major installations, working with outside contractors.
• On-off shifts and weekends may be called upon to return to the plant for repairs.
• Possible member of plant safety team inspecting safety violations.
• To perform routine building maintenance duties, including carpentry, electrical work, plumbing, painting, and basic equipment or facility repairs.
• Work with outside contractors or companies to facilitate the repair or installation of equipment.
• Other duties as assigned.
Requirements
Experience, Education, and Licensure/Certification Requirements:
• Some vocational or community college with related coursework or equivalent experience preferred.
• Electrical background a plus.
• Familiar with pneumatics, hydraulics, boiler operations, and refrigeration.
Required Skills/Abilities:
• Ability to understand and carry out routine oral and written instructions.
• Ability to maintain effective working relationships with other employees.
• Must be able to perform tasks independently after being given specific instructions.
• Sufficient reading and writing ability to follow work order instructions and prepare maintenance reports. Must read and comprehend instructions, machine manuals, diagrams, and general schedule guidelines.
• Valid state motor vehicle operator's permit to operate company vehicle and ability to pass forklift operator test.
• Attention and care required to prevent injury to others when performing maintenance work.
• Ability to read and comprehend instructions, short correspondence, and general schedule guidelines. Ability to write correspondence and effectively present information to individuals and small group situations.
• Ability to read and comprehend electrical and mechanical drawings and schematics. Ability to utilize equipment manuals and information to troubleshoot, repair, disassemble, and reassemble equipment and machines.
• Advanced knowledge of air systems, including solenoid valves, piping systems, and compressors.
• Advanced knowledge of electrical equipment, including motor starters, circuit breakers, test equipment, and electrical safety.
• Advanced knowledge of mechanical parts, such as bearings, belts, chains, sprockets, fasteners, gearboxes, lubrication, piping, and lubricants.
• Ability to operate common shop equipment such as saws, torches, presses, grinders, or drills. Use power tools and abrasive wheels to modify or repair equipment. Ability to use hand tools and trades-type tools.
• Satisfactory work record, as determined by plant management. Must be a steady, reliable worker.
• Minimum completion of two years of industrial maintenance experience or equivalent mechanical/electrical experience.
• Willingness to work various shifts depending on production with a seven-day cycle.
• Ability to utilize computer-based maintenance software programs to enter information, create work orders, and generate reports and other functions as required with a computer.
Physical Requirements:
• Ability to safely and successfully perform the essential job functions consistent with meeting qualitative and/or quantitative productivity standards.
• Ability to maintain regular, punctual attendance.
• Ability to perform repetitive and physically demanding tasks (lifting, walking, working at heights, climbing, pushing, pulling, twisting, and stooping).
• Must be able to work in a fast-paced, loud, and labor-intensive environment in variable temperatures (from outdoor heat to indoor refrigerated coolers).
• Prolonged periods of standing and walking.
• Able to bend, stretch, push, pull, and move to reach clean and service machinery.
• Must be able to inspect machines visually.
• Must be able to lift and carry up to 50 pounds.
