Maintenance Specialist 2

The Washington State Department of Transportation (WSDOT) is a multimodal agency with a global reputation for excellence. WSDOT is currently seeking a reliable individual to fill a Maintenance Specialist 2 vacancy in Union Gap, WA. Located in the South Central Region, the WSDOT Sign Shop is the sole sign fabrication and distribution organization for the entire agency. In this role, you will assist with receiving shipments, accurately counting and tracking materials, organizing inventory, and preparing outgoing orders in a way that minimizes palletization and reduces shipping costs. As a fast-paced, high-volume manufacturing facility, the Sign Shop plays a critical role in producing high-quality signage for WSDOT Engineering, Regional Maintenance Operations, Aviation, and Ferry Services. This position also supports sign design and fabrication efforts, helping ensure products are completed safely, accurately, and in compliance with state and federal standards that keep Washington's transportation system safe and functional.

Among the varied range of responsibilities held within this role, the Maintenance Specialist 2 will:

• Safely handle and position aluminum materials, including large sheets, to apply reflective sheeting using fabrication equipment.
• Verify sizes, colors, and order specifications to ensure accurate and compliant sign production.
• Measure, cut, and assemble materials using hand tools and shop equipment while following safe work practices.
• Design and produce traffic signs using computer software and fabrication equipment in accordance with state and federal standards.
• Maintain a clean, organized, and safe work environment while coordinating with team members to ensure quality and efficiency.
• Operate an 8000 pound forklift to receive, move, and store materials, while tracking and maintaining accurate inventory records.
• Prepare and coordinate shipments by packaging products, scheduling pickups, and loading freight to ensure safe and cost-effective delivery.
• Perform other duties as assigned, including shop upkeep, assisting other teams, attending training, and supporting emergency response activities.

To be considered for this opportunity, the following competencies are required :

• Sign Fabrication: Demonstrated ability to safely and effectively operate equipment necessary for sign fabrication.
• Inventory Management: Basic knowledge of inventory and stock control procedures, with demonstrated experience tracking material usage and maintaining accurate records.
• Warehouse Operations: Demonstrated experience receiving and storing materials, coordinating orders and safely operating equipment common to the warehouse setting.
• Safety Awareness & Compliance: Strong understanding of workplace safety procedures and commitment to following safety policies, including confined space entry, fall protection, and hazardous material handling.
• Communication: Ability to effectively and professionally communicate verbally and in writing with internal staff, vendors, and the public.
• Growth Mindset: Actively demonstrates a commitment to learning and growth.
• Service-Oriented: Demonstrates a willingness to take action to meet the needs of others.

In addition to the competencies above, the following are also required :

• A Forklift Operator certification, or the ability to obtain within 6 months of hire.
• The ability to safely move, place, and manipulate objects up to 50 pounds.

It is preferred that qualified candidates also have:

• Regulations & Procedures Application: Demonstrated ability to understand and apply manuals, regulations, and procedures to inventory control and material fabrication.

This recruitment may also be used to fill additional positions per business needs. This position is not eligible for remote work. In addition to base salary, employees may be entitled to other forms of compensation depending on the type, duties, or location of the position.
